Originally developed in the 1920s and danced to ragtime, the foxtrot is a progressive dance in quaternary meter characterized by long, continuous flowing steps across the dance floor, often associated with the sound of big bands.
The foxtrot reached its height of popularity in the 1930s, and remains practiced today. The etymology of foxtrot is commonly attributed to entertainer and vaudeville actor Harry Fox who popularized the dance.
