Flute Sheet Music Recursions for Flute Solo by Patricio da Silva

Program Notes

Recursions (2008), four pieces for solo flute, on the formation and growth of melodic patterns containing embedded copies of itself.
Recursive processes repeat items in a self-similar way. Such processes can be observed, for example, in the construction of embedded structures such as Russian dolls, where copies of the whole are reproduced smaller within another copy of the whole. Recursion is the actual mechanism that makes it possible to work as such, where the end of a process becomes the beginning of another. Furthermore, this process can be re-articulated ad infitinitum.
Commissioned by and dedicated to Dorothy Stone, with the support from the American Composers Forum - Los Angeles Chapter.
